Rome [ENA] Travel & Tourism is a noteworthy export sector. Spending by foreign visitors (otherwise known as visitor exports) accounted for over 5% of total global exports in 2013 and 28% of service sector exports. As the third-largest sector in international trade, accounting for 10.4% of global gross domestic product (GDP) and supporting 313 million jobs worldwide, the tourism sector is making strong contributions towards

achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Rome and Italy today are among the most important tourist destinations of the world, due to the incalculable immensity of archaeological and art treasures, as well as for the charm of unique traditions, the beauty of panoramic views, and the majesty of magnificent "villas" (parks). In 2017, trips with overnight stays made by residents were 66,347 million. The number of trips was stable compared to 2016. The average duration of trips increased slightly at 5.8 nights (6 nights for holiday trips and 3.5 for business trips), corresponding to an amount of 383 million nights (+7.7% compared to 2016).

Between 2016 and 2017, long holidays (32,7 million) increased by 9.1% and short holidays (28 million) were stable. Business trips (5,7 million) decreased by 15.6% reaching the lowest level since 2007. Domestic destinations hosted 81.0% of trips. Trips to foreign countries (19.0%) were mainly directed towards EU destinations (13.4%). The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO ), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), and the International Trade Centre (ITC) have issued the joint communication "Tourism, Trade and the WTO" confirming the importance of enhanced global cooperation on trade & tourism, and encouraging greater participation of the tourism sector in trade policy.

This joint communication aims to emphasize the importance of tourism. According to WTTC, between 7 and 19 million new jobs could be created in the G20 countries alone by investing in biometrics and new airport infrastructure to make existing terminal facilities and processes well-organized, more secure and seamless for passengers. In addition, GDP associated with travel and tourism grew one and a half times more than the world economy in 2017, at 4.6%, and the projections suggest that the sector will continue to outpace global economic growth.

Projections extending to 2030 indicate that the tourism sector is showing continued rapid growth, with international tourist arrivals worldwide estimated to increase by 3.3% per year to reach 1.8 billion by 2030, according to UNWTO’s long-term forecast report Tourism Towards 2030. At the same time, the market share of emerging economies, which has already increased from 30% in 1980 to 45% in 2016, is appraised to reach 57% by 2030, equivalent to over 1 billion international tourist arrivals.

It must be further emphasized that the international trading system has huge effects on international tourism, not only with regards to the transport of tourists across borders, but also the procurement of the multitude of goods and services (from safari jeeps to restaurant chefs to hotel accounting software ) essential for the supply of international tourism.
